Qantas Dreamliner will fly non-stop from Perth to London

Qantas is set to add to its list of aviation firsts, with the national carrier confirming it will operate non-stop flights from Perth to London using the 787-9 Dreamliner. 

The 14,498 kilometre service will be the first regular passenger service to link Australia with Europe directly when it begins in March 2018.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the history-making route would be a watershed for travel, tourism and trade.

“When Qantas created the Kangaroo Route to London in 1947, it took four days and nine stops. Now it will take just 17 hours from Perth non-stop.

“This is a game-changing route flown by a game-changing aircraft. Australians have never had a direct link to Europe before, so the opportunities this opens up are huge.

“It’s great news for travellers because it will make it easier to get to London. It’s great news for Western Australia because it will bring jobs and tourism. And it’s great news for the nation, because it will bring us closer to one of our biggest trade partners and sources of visitors.”

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is proud to present “Rauschenberg in China.” On view in UCCA’s Great Hall from 12 June to 21 August 2016, the exhibition centers on Robert Rauschenberg’s (1925-2008) magnum opus The 1/4 Mile or 2 Furlong Piece (1981–98), its 190 parts stretching approximately 305 meters and exhibited for the first time since 2000. Also included in the exhibition is a selection of Rauschenberg’s color photographs titled Studies for Chinese Summerhall (1983), taken during the artist’s travels in China in 1982. Accompanying these works is a collection of documentation and ephemera related to Rauschenberg’s transformational 1985 exhibition “ROCI CHINA” at the institution now known as the National Art Museum of China.

CHART ART FAIR, the leading Nordic contemporary art fair, returns to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen for its fourth edition from August 26 – 28, 2016. Since its inception, CHART has established itself as the international platform for contemporary art in the region.

CHART breaks with the traditional fair format by carefully curating the galleries’ artwork and presenting everything in unison as an exhibition, in the halls of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The selection and curation is realised by the five founding galleries based in Copenhagen: Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, V1 Gallery, Andersen’s Contemporary and David Risley Gallery.

This year 28 of the leading galleries from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) and 2 galleries based outside of the Nordic region, but originating from Copenhagen and Helsinki, have been invited to participate in the fair. Belenius/Nordenhake (SE), Galleri Brandstrup (NO), Croy Nielsen (DE), and Helsinki Contemporary (FI) will exhibit at the fair for the first time.

Booking a holiday makes 15 per cent of British women happier than sex, says Airbnb

‘Desktop Holidays’ on the rise: Beat the January Blues by browsing holiday websites

Renowned British neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis has identified a rise in people browsing holiday sites in January as a means of escapism, terming this ‘desktop holidays’.

The news comes as leading community driven hospitality company Airbnb releases data showing a significant rise in how long people spend lusting after holiday destinations in January. Typically guests browse for 36 percent more time in January than December, which Dr David Lewis attributes to the intrinsic desire for a feel-good boost.

Research from the UK confirms that 75 per cent of people regularly browse travel websites to cheer themselves up - one in three doing so when they should be working. This isn't the only coping mechanism however; one in ten admit to taking a sniff of sunscreen for a spot of sensory escapism, and actually booking a holiday makes 15 per cent of women happier than sex.

Neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis comments that for the British: “January is the month when Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is most severe. Grey skies, short days and a lack of sunshine can lead to bouts of ‘winter depression’ by increasing the production of melatonin by the brain’s pineal gland. The hormone can generate feelings of despair, guilt, a loss of pleasure in everyday activities, irritability and a lack of energy.

“One answer is to use the Internet to fantasise about your perfect holiday in the sun. This form of ‘Mind Travel’ causes feel-good chemicals such as dopamine, dubbed the ‘pleasure pedal,’ to flood into your brain making us happier, more energetic and more optimistic.”

The number of booking per minute also sees a spike in January, up 18 percent on the yearly average.  Airbnb sees an average 45 bookings per minute in January, compared to a yearly average of 38 per minute.

As for the type of properties that make up these dream holidays, the more unusual the better. Browsers using the Wish List tool are choosing treehouses over stately homes, and dreaming about igloos, converted vans, lighthouses and caves.

Photographer Ansell Cizic first came to the East End as a fashion advertising photographer in the 1980s, based in Curtain Road at a time when SCP was the sole local purveyor of aspirational design artifacts. The Bricklayers Arms, The City Beverage Company and a tiny paper/tobacconist shop on the corner of Curtain Road/Old Street were suppliers of his staples. 

Times have changed.

A resident of Hackney Wick now for over ten years, he has had an anthropologist's eye on the evolving communities and their sub divisions; watching them grow and flourish (given the right conditions) only to be consumed within a relatively short space of time by the latest

dominant species/culture.

Like all photographers, Ansell  is an inveterate collector by nature. He collects subjects and in this instance he has chosen to gather together endangered species soon to be erased from their natural habitat. The collection of creative and quite often exotic creatures in this ever burgeoning archive represent only the tip of a colossal künstlerhandwerkerberg......... (Ansell's sure the Germans wish they’d thought of it!) soon to disappear under the tsunami of property development that began almost 40 years ago.

Ansell's brief to himself was very simple: one camera, one lens, daylight and a limited time in which make the photograph. None of the intrusive paraphernalia (lighting, stylists, creative directors etc) of his former photographic incarnation.

He is hopeful that he has avoided a ‘theme’ whilst making these images, and yet, as each image has a unique taste, there is inevitably an aesthetic flavour and humour that is particular to Ansell Cizic.

Welcome to Hello Lamp Post, a near-future interactive urban experiment where objects across the city come to life. Hello Lamp Post encourages everyone to rediscover their local environment, share memories of their city and uncover the stories that other people leave behind.

Every object in Hello Lamp Post has a name and number, in the form of identification codes. Players can talk to the objects by sending personal SMS messages to each code, including lamp posts, post boxes, utility boxes or telegraph poles – and maybe even some of the iconic landmarks across the city.

Hello Lamp Post encourages you to look at the city with fresh eyes and engage with systems we often take for granted – a chance for us to slow down, reflect and see the city as a playground. By chatting to these smart objects, the Singaporean public can shape thinking on the future of a smart city. The artists and FutureEverything will create a presentation on the views of Singaporeans at the FutureEverything Singapore Conference.

Loop.pH - The Chronarium Sleep Lab

People living today sleep significantly less than generations before and sleep disorders are on the rise costing the economy billions. We are only just beginning to understand the impact that sleep disorders have on people's lives and society at large, such as depression, weight gain, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. With the quantity and quality of sleep being constantly challenged by round the clock communications and globalised business, it’s becoming increasingly important to improve the quality of our resting time and develop the necessary skills for sleep. The Chronarium Sleep Lab by UK-based artists Loop.pH explores the role of public space in tackling this challenge as a shared resource for health and wellbeing.

The Chronarium is a public sleep laboratory and faraday cave presented as an immersive audiovisual environment that totally transforms its location into a restorative, calm and contemplative experience, responding to the Smart Nation’s need to tackle the strain on healthcare systems.

Once visitors have entered The Chronarium they will be both shielded from electromagnetic frequencies and exposed to different environmental stimuli that aims to reset their internal circadian rhythm for better, more harmonious sleep. They will be invited to lie back and rest inside a huge hanging catenary net that gently rocks and moves inside the textile space.

The cyclical audiovisual program will be developed in consultation with a leading sleep scientist and look to entrain the brain by encouraging a deep relaxation and rest over a 10-15 minute period using pink noise and a wash of coloured light.

These early prototypes will be hosted at ArtScience Museum for the public to explore as part of its Sunday Showcase series.

The Innovation Lab will devise imaginative ways to engage the public in envisioning the future of technology and a Smart Nation. We'll be inviting a range of participants across art, design and technology to work together in imagining what the future for a Smart Nation could entail. National Gallery Singapore: Family of Ng Teng Fong Donates $20 Million to Art Development

                                                         

The National Gallery Singapore has announced the family of the late Ng Teng Fong, founder of Far East Organisation, as its fifth founding partner. The Ng family’s $20 million donation will contribute to the Gallery’s research, curatorial and exhibition work, with a focus on outdoor presentations of commissioned art.

To commemorate the partnership, the Gallery’s roof garden exhibition space located at Level 5 of the City Hall Wing will be named Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery.  This Gallery will also feature the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission series.

National Gallery Singapore CEO Ms Chong Siak Ching said, “The philanthropic contribution from the Ng family will boost our efforts in engaging more visitors with inspiring and differentiated art experiences. By taking exhibitions out of typical gallery spaces, we want to challenge talented artists to create thought-provoking pieces that will be presented against a canvas of lush greenery at the roof garden. This is one of the many ways that we will refresh the way that visitors experience art within the museum.”

The first Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Commission will be created by Danh Vo as part of the Gallery’s Imagining Southeast Asia programme. It will feature annual site-specific commissions by leading artists that relate to the curatorial narratives of the museum’s collections and permanent galleries. Vo’s art draws on his personal experience to explore broader historical, social and political themes. Most recently, Vo represented Denmark at Venice Biennale 2015.

The family of the late Mr Ng Teng Fong said, “Our family is deeply grateful for the opportunity to be associated with the National Gallery Singapore, an invaluable national heritage and an exciting new icon of Singapore’s evolving arts landscape.

“This gift is made in grateful thanksgiving to God for His grace upon the life of our father. We thank the National Gallery for naming the Gallery’s roof garden and exhibition series after our late father, as a meaningful way to remember him. It is our hope that the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery and Commission will be an inspiring environment that brings art to all amidst a verdant green landscape.”
 
The roof garden is the result of restoration works to preserve the architectural authenticity and character of the former Supreme Court and City Hall. Spanning 3,000 square metres, the garden features a five-metre tall vertical green wall and overlooks the Civic District. The first admission-free exhibition at the roof garden is scheduled to open April 2016.

The Spectacular Treasures of Northern Greece

One of the World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries of Meteora in Greece, the Agia Triada.

Archaeological and cultural tour specialist Peter Sommer Travels will explore some of the greatest treasures of Greece this year, heading away from the island crowds to reveal the extraordinary history of the region of Macedonia.

A new 14-day expedition, From the Slopes of Mount Olympus to the Shores of the Aegean explores the region through its archaeology, food and wine, linking some of the most spectacular scenery of northern Greece with a rich history dating back thousands of years. 

Hosted by archaeologists and historians Heinrich Hall and Dr Maria Girtzi, the tour was chosen by London’s Sunday Times as one of its top 100 holidays.  It will be held from September 2 to 15, 2015, travelling through beautiful and unusually diverse landscapes, from lofty mountains to fertile plains and the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

Catering to no more than 16 people, the tour provides a chance to explore grand archaeological sites, mighty castles, serene monasteries, labyrinthine villages and the great city of Thessaloniki, home to many different cultures during its 2300-year history.

It includes the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vergina, where Alexander the Great was proclaimed king and where visitors can view the lavish treasures of the tomb of his father, Phillip II. The tour also visits Meteora, renowned for its striking mountain landscapes in which ancient Byzantine monasteries sit precariously atop sandstone pillars.

Along the way, guests will experience the region’s culture through its food and wine, enjoying excellent meals at specially chosen venues and some of the wines that have emerged from the recent Greek winemaking revival.
