Chen Zhen at Rockbund Art Museum

April 30th - This May, Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) in Shanghai will celebrate its 5th anniversary with an ambitious new exhibition “Chen Zhen: Without going to New York and Paris, life could be internationalised,” which will run from May 30 – October 7, 2015.

Daily Incantations, 1996, Courtesy de Sarthe Gallery, Hong Kong and GALLERIA CONTINUA, San Gimignano / Beijing / Les Moulins, Photo Tom Powell.

The exhibition will be displayed in RAM’s exquisite heritage Art Deco building on the Shanghai Bund district, which blends a Western architectural style (restored by David Chipperfield prior to opening in 2010) with Chinese decorative elements within Shanghai’s diverse cityscape. This blend reflects Chen Zhen’s own body of work, aiming to generate a powerful resonance and dynamic dialogue within the context of Shanghai as both a Chinese and global city. In conjunction with all of RAM’s programmes, the exhibition has been conceived and curated in close relation to the architectural and curatorial context of the Museum and highlights include Precipitous Parturition, a long sculpture made of bicycle inner tubes that will snake through the upper gallery space.

Organized by RAM, curated by international curator Hou Hanru, with Xu Min, the long-term life and work partner of Chen Zhen, as artistic consultant, the show will feature large-scale installations, as well as sketches and notes by Shanghai-born conceptual artist Chen Zhen (1955–2000). The exhibition will also include an installation from the catalogue Chen Zhen. 1991-2000 Unrealized (Ed. Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2007), thanks to the support of RAM in collaboration with the artist’s estate.

Largely recognized as one of the most important Chinese artists of the last two decades, Chen Zhen’s work derives from his personal experience of migrating and working across different continents and cultures.  Chen Zhen drew inspiration from his own life experience, travelling between his native city of Shanghai and Paris, responding to and engaging with contemporary social issues across different cultures.

The new exhibition will focus on Chen Zhen’s travels in and out of Shanghai during the 1990s, reflecting on the rapid changes of social reality within the city at this time. Chen Zhen frequently returned to Shanghai during this period and developed a series of new works responding to the changing social landscape as Shanghai established itself as a new global city. Large scale installations on display, such as Le Bureau de change and Daily Incantations reveal this interest in Shanghai’s urban and socio-economic developments and provide a commentary on the changing daily life Chen Zhen witnessed.

Throughout the exhibition, Chen Zhen’s keen interest in human conditions is presented, from his reflections on his own personal health, seen in the delicate alabaster and crystal sculptures of Zen Garden and Crystal Landscape of Inner Body (Coq), against the backdrop of an ever-changing economic, political and social landscape. Using a range of new and recycled materials, many of the installations include everyday objects that could be found on the streets but have been transformed into performative and site-specific assemblages. Alongside more traditional objects such as Chinese chamber pots and coins, Chen Zhen also worked with new technologies and digital media, marrying cultural heritages with contemporary innovations in order to create a synergy reflective of the contemporary world.

About the Artist
Chen Zhen was born in Shanghai, China in 1955, and died in Paris in 2000. In his home city he attended the Fine Arts and Craft School and the Drama Institute, specializing in set design. After moving to Paris, he studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the Institut des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques (where he later became a teacher) between 1986 and 1989. In the course of his career he received various international awards, and showed his work in about a hundred solo and group exhibitions around the world, becoming a prominent figure on the international art scene.

In 1990 he showed his first series of installations. From then on his artistic work dwelt entirely on three major periods of great importance for his own experience and his views on art: the Cultural Revolution, the reform of China and his engagement with the Western world. His work focuses on the relations between human beings, nature and objects; the incommunicability and lack of understanding between human beings; and finally on meditation and therapy. However, he was also interested in architecture and urbanization on a global scale.

About the curator
Hou Hanru is a curator and critic. Born in 1963 in Guangzhou, China, he received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and moved to Paris in 1990. He lived 16 years in France before moving to America in 2006. Based in Paris, San Francisco and Rome, he currently works as Artistic Director of MAXXI, National Museum of 21st Century Arts, Rome, Italy. He has been consultant to many international institutions. Among about twenty independent curators in the world, Hou is one of the top curators and thinkers.

For the Venice Biennale, the largest art platform in the world, Hou Hanru curated the French Pavilion in 1999, the “Zone Of Urgency” in 2003 and the Chinese Pavilion in 2007. These exhibitions brought him international recognition in the art world. He also worked as a curator at the Shanghai Biennale in 2000.

Hou Hanru co-curated "Cities on the Move" from 1997 to 2000, which involved more than 140 artists, architects and other creators, and toured seven cities around the world, receiving great global attention in the fields of art and architecture.

About RAM
For 5 years RAM has been at the fore-front of the growing contemporary art scene in China, presenting world-class programmes in a unique museum setting. A boutique Museum of the upmost quality, RAM holds a unique position within Shanghai’s continually expanding cultural scene. The Museum is located within the Bund district and housed in an exquisite heritage Art Deco building which was renovated by architect David Chipperfield before opening in 2010.

The museum’s exemplary curatorial, education and research programmes showcase acclaimed and emerging Chinese and international artists, responding to and reflecting on present and urgent challenges of society locally and internationally. RAM presents a bold and pioneering programme of 3 exhibitions per year; exploring and realising artists’ most ambitious projects and working with them to tailor exhibitions to the Museum and to the Shanghai context, often with a large proportion of works being new commissions. RAM devises, produces and curates its programme in-house, in conjunction with carefully selected international collaborations of the highest quality.

This year RAM will celebrate its 5th anniversary, reflecting on its exceptional programme over the past years; acknowledging the museum’s unique position within China’s dynamic contemporary art scene; looking ahead to continuing to develop its pioneering exhibition, education and research programmes; and pursuing its ongoing mission to engage the community to fulfil and grow the social function of the Museum. “Chen Zhen: Without going to New York and Paris, life could be internationalized” will be presented as part of RAM’s 5th anniversary celebrations.

Hoppy Easter! Not the bunny ...more a swampy.

Looks like a kangaroo or wallaby but in fact the swamp, or black wallaby (wallaby bicolor)  is the only living member of the genus Wallabia. The difference is all in the chromosomes, apparently.

Sure it hops with the best of them but, unlike the others, it puts its head down when going for it in the bush. Love the long tail with the white tip - this one is standing in our pond which is now full of water again after yesterday's torrential  rain. The frogs are in their element!

Vertigo: where the Peregrine Falcons nest

Cliff view ©AP BCTraveller.
Out on a limb (rock!) to photograph the boronia on the cliffside. The Peregrine falcons nest in a little cave, centre left. Wedge-tailed eagles on the other side of the plateau, when they choose us. Yesterday we had a visit from yellow-tailed cockatoos, glossy black cockatoos, a lyrebird, several satin bowerbirds, wonga pigeons, brown cuckoo doves, king parrots plus a host of little birds including fantails and yellow robins.

Here's a swamp wallaby in our pond, just about to drink from what's left of the water. A possum has been trying to get in to our place at night,  seems very keen after it managed a raid on the bananas.

Curated by the Jewish Museum of Vienna and coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Vienna's splendid Ringstrasse Boulevard.

The Jewish Museum of Australia (JMA) in Melbourne is exhibiting Andy Warhol’s Jewish Geniuses from the Jewish Museum of Vienna, featuring ten screen portraits of famous Jewish personalities of the 20th century. From a list of almost 100 names Warhol chose ten personalities who reveal the depth and breadth of Jewish contribution to 20th century cultural life.

Curated by the Jewish Museum of Vienna, the exhibition features portraits of psychologist Sigmund Freud, Vienna’s most famous Jewish personality; Viennese-born philosopher Martin Buber; writer Franz Kafka; physicist Albert Einstein; composer George Gershwin; The Marx Brothers actors; writer Gertrude Stein; judge Louis Brandeis; actress Sarah Bernhardt; and Golda Meir, first female prime minister of Israel.

This is the first time that this body of work is being exhibited in Australia allowing the audience to view such captivating portraits with an intriguing narrative. The exhibition appeals to both the arts and the Jewish communities alike.

Andy Warhol’s Jewish Geniuses also includes photographs of Andy Warhol, a copy of the list of 100 names; as well as a short documentary film.

Extended until 26 May 2015, Andy Warhol’s oeuvre is on display at the Jewish Museum of Australia, 26 Alma Road, St. Kilda; www.jewishmuseum.com.au http://www.jewishmuseum.com.au> .

To combine the visual treat with a culinary one, the JMA has joined forces with the upcoming Melbourne Food & Wine Festival: “Table for One” - a Warhol inspired dining event will be offered at the JMA on Wednesday, 11 March and Thursday, 12 March. Inspired by the artist’s vision of Andy-Mats, a chain of restaurants based on automatic vending machines, the JMA is hosting an Andy Warhol themed dining experience and guided tour – a unique Warhol-centric event. Bookings through the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au <http://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au>  .

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Jewish Museum of Australia in co-operation with The Shalom Institute in Sydney is hosting a special educational Study Tour of Jewish Vienna from 1 to 9 June 2015. Led by Dr Paul Forgasz, Director of Jewish Studies at the Monash University in Melbourne, the program highlights the contribution of the Jewish community to Vienna’s past and present. Names such as Freud, Schönberg, Zweig and Herzl are forever linked with the capital’s rich tapestry of intellectuals and artists.

This tour coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Ringstrasse Boulevard, the world’s most beautiful boulevard around Vienna’s city centre featuring imperial palaces, museums, public buildings and splendid private residences. In the salons of the Jewish bourgeoisie along the Ringstrasse, hostesses entertained their wealthy friends and artists alike; creating space for artistic expressions.

Few European cities have a history as closely connected with Jewish history as Vienna. Participants of this study tour will experience the dark days of Jewish Vienna as well as the revival of the small but vibrant Jewish community. During the past three decades, the city has stepped up efforts to face up to the history of Jews in Vienna, including both positive and negative aspects, and to reexamine Vienna’s Jewish heritage.

In addition to the Jewish institutions that have sprung up over the last few years – thanks to the support of the City of Vienna – a number of museums and memorials evoke the city’s Jewish heritage: the Jewish Museum of the City of Vienna, the Judenplatz Museum, the Sigmund Freud Museum, the Arnold Schoenberg Center, the Memorial against War and Fascism on Albertinaplatz and the Shoah Memorial on Judenplatz, to name only the most important.

Rice paper 'Boat' by Zhu Jinshi at Pearl Lam Galleries.

An 18-metre 'Boat' made from bamboo, cotton and around 10,000 sheets of rice paper.!

'Boat' by Zhu Jinshi.
Images courtesy of Pearl Lam Galleries.
Pearl Lam Galleries announced today their collaboration with Hongkong Land to bring to Hong Kong for the first time a monumental 18-metre long, 7-metre high installation, 'Boat', by Zhu Jinshi, composed of bamboo, cotton and over 10,000 sheets of xuan (rice) paper.

Zhu Jinshi is one of China’s leading contemporary artists and xuan has been a major medium in his repertoire since 1988 when, working in Berlin, he produced A Cube of Xuan Paper, which will alson be exhibited by Pearl Lam Galleries at the same time in their March exhibition Perfection of Chance - a Yi Pai Exhibition at their Pedder Building space.

The sheer size and visual impact of 'Boat' is in stark contrast to the delicate nature of the material from which it is made, and the meditative process of working with xuan paper, is testament to his belief that it is only through the contact and dialogue with his chosen materials that he can express his perception and understanding of the world.

Primarily 'Boat' addresses the concept of time, both subjective time, and time in a cultural sense; Zhu Jinshi describes the function of the Boat: “Whereas time only moves forward, the Boat can be sailed in any direction. The Boat's cultural resonance is constructed of time itself, continuously ebbing and flowing through our imagination.” The Boat can thus be seen as a vessel for the cultural implications of its materials as well as for the artist’s own journey, and the viewer’s passage through space and time. The installation is representative of the art of ‘Yi Pai’, where the artist's fascination with time is transformed into a physical manifestation.

Pearl Lam said: “Zhu Jinshi’s xuan paper Boat is characteristic of the artist’s practice which deconstructs Western theories of art and visual language by rooting them to Chinese traditions and philosophy. The work’s many layers of cultural resonance embody Zhu’s own distinctive artistic career. I am delighted to be bringing a large scale installation work by the artist to Hong Kong for the first time.”

Exhibition Dates
9 March – 31 March, 2015
Daily, 9am– 7pm

This hideaway holiday cottage is part of the atmospheric, 400-year old Bond End Farm at Upton St Leonards near Painswick, Gloucestershire. Dating from Tudor times, this is just the place for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in history – coinciding with the huge new wave of interest in the Tudors fuelled by the BBC's compelling new drama series, Wolf Hall. Henry V111 himself is said to have dropped in to Bond End Farm, adding yet another dimension!
