Speeding through the Spanish countryside from Seville to Zaragoza and back to Madrid in the summer of 2025, I was reminded of how much I love travelling by train. Long-distance is my choice, through a range of countries, which is why a post by the incomparable 'Man in Seat 61' set my wheels in motion to try a new journey he announced.
Brussels to Zurich, Como & Milan
From September 9, 2026, share-funded European Sleeper trains will add a thrice weekly Brussels-Milan sleeper to their existing Brussels-Prague and Paris-Berlin sleeper trains, with a connection from London via Eurostar.
So we'll be able to travel from London to Switzerland and Italy with one station change (same station). I now it's a pity to miss the countryside at night but we'll glimpse the Rhine Valley in the evening and wake in the Swiss Alps on the scenic Gotthard route.
Tickets in a shared Classic compartment* start from just €49.99 one-way per person. Prices vary depending on the route and travel date. To book, simply select 'Classic' and choose 'shared'. You can also opt for the more affordable Budget class or upgrade to Comfort class for a restful night. Women-Only compartments are available.
* Best choice for:
- Adventurous friends & couples
- Solo travellers
An Amsterdam-Milan choice is planned for early 2027.
